In teaching English, it is necessary to assess theoretical knowledge, but it is also necessary to assess practical and cognitive skills. Under this premise, alternative methods for assessing learning progress have become an increasingly relevant option. Below, we share some of these techniques that promote a more inclusive and effective assessment in the English classroom.
Examples of Alternative Assessment Methods
1. Individual or Group Projects:
Projects that allow students to apply what they have learned in real and creative contexts. Applications of these projects range from presentations to infographics or videos. These projects would not only assess language knowledge, but also other acquired skills such as organization and presentation of ideas.

This activity, in addition to being fun, allows for a practical assessment of communication skills.
3. Debates
They promote language learning and the development of critical thinking. This method is perfect for assessing skills such as critical thinking and expression under high-pressure situations; it also encourages classroom interaction.
Sample debate: You can propose current topics such as “Is it necessary to learn English to access better job opportunities?” and divide students into teams with opposing opinions. This way, not only will they practice the language, but also respect for the opinions of others and the ability to argue.
4. Portfolios:
Portfolios allow for ongoing, personalized assessment as students can include a variety of written work, reflections, and other products that demonstrate their English language skills.
Portfolio example: In the portfolio, students can collect essays, short stories, recordings of their speaking practice and vocabulary exercises. This variety of content allows for a comprehensive assessment of their language development.
5. Peer review:
It is useful for developing critical and constructive assessment skills. In addition, peers participate more and not necessarily the person in charge of the classroom. Another advantage is that this method fosters a collaborative environment and gives students the opportunity to learn from others.
